CSVs are human-readable, flexible, and light in the sense that the file size won't ever be enormous. So why not use it? Well, exporting to CSV can result in data loss, including your contacts' photo, nickname, website, and sometimes the "notes" field.

CSVs are bad at handling special characters, so if you have contact information in another script or know people with accent marks in their names, those will be gone or garbled. It's a more comprehensive exporting format for contact information, which means the resulting file will likely be bigger than a CSV. An exported vCard doesn't lose as much data and it supports more but not all special characters and foreign alphabets.

You'll still lose nicknames, websites, and AIM data when exporting to vCard, however. Once you figure out which format you want to use and verifying it will work with whatever apps and database you have in mind, you can download your contacts from one and upload them to another.

How to Sync a Mac Address Book With Google Contacts

It's not a bad idea to spot-check a few of the resulting contacts to make sure it worked correctly. Now that you've copied the contacts from one app to another, do you want new changes you make in one of the apps to automatically appear in the other? If so, you'll need a third-party tool for the job. They're sometimes collectively called automation tools. Automation tools can connect apps that don't necessarily integrate on their own.
